The Portland Timbers are a pillar of American soccer. Existing in a strong soccer community and having built an impressive relationship with the fan base, the Timbers have remained as soccer leagues have risen and fallen across the national landscape. Originally founded in 1975 as part of the North American Soccer League (NASL), Portland has continually reinvented itself and played in eight leagues prior to joining MLS in 2011. Timber Joey is a massive lumberjack that wields a chainsaw and slices around (circle) of a large log each time Portland scores a goal. The Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps have played alongside Portland since the NASL days and the three clubs maintain the hotly contested Cascadia Cup each year.

Providence Park has seen nearly a century of sporting history in Portland. Originally opened in 1926, built next to the Multnomah Athletic Club, the ground hosted major in-state college football games, minor league baseball teams, and rose festivals. Providence Park has been renovated several times over to retain its central spot in Oregon athletics. The MLS club recently undertook renovations in 2018 & 2019 to expand the seating capacity to 21,000+ (as the ground typically sells out) and add new suites. The Timbers have maintained the iconic outside look of the stadium that harkens back to American sports venues in downtown areas of the mid-1900s while having a renovated and vibrant interior.

The Timbers continually sell out matches throughout the season and have one of the largest, well-organized supporters’ groups in MLS – The Timbers Army, who fill up sections 101-108 and 201-208. The stadium offers field-level seating, various cantina and party decks to watch games from, as well as suites. Located just to the west of downtown Portland and the Willamette River, fans can easily access the ground either by foot or public transit. Both the Red Line and the Blue Line on the MAX Light Rail system stop at Providence Park, as do public bus lines 18 and 63. Portland is known as the ‘Rose City’ and just west of the stadium is the International Rose Garden, not only a marque Portland site but one of the world’s best rose gardens. If you are looking for a drink or food after the match check out the Commodore Lounge, the Civic Taproom and Bottle Shop, and the Wildwood Saloon, all of which are just outside of the MLS ground.
