In 1970, Jimmy released his first album, Down to Earth. One year later, singer Jerry Jeff Walker took him to Key West, where Jimmy moved shortly thereafter. Upon his arrival, Jimmy started playing at the Chart Room Bar in the Pier House Motel. The easygoing way of life in Key West rubbed off on Jimmy and he started fusing elements of country, rock, folk, and coastal sounds into his music.
Jimmy’s love of tropical living is partially what inspired the name of his band, The Coral Reefer Band. The name alludes to two elements of tranquil living: coral reefs and marijuana. Some of the songs Jimmy has recorded with The Coral Reefer Band include his hits “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday.”
In addition to being a songwriter and musician, Jimmy is also an author and businessman. He owns the Margaritaville Cafe restaurant chain, which he opened in 1985, and he also co-developed the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain. He has licensed Margaritaville tequila, footwear, and food. His music and business ventures have given him an estimated net worth of $550 million.
Jimmy’s published works include three #1 New York Times bestsellers and two children’s books. Among them are his first book, “Tales From Margaritaville” and “A Pirate Looks at Fifty.” With both of these landing the top spot on the New York Times list, Jimmy became one of just eight authors in the list’s history to have both a fiction and nonfiction title reach number one.
In 2000, Jimmy and his band played on the White House lawn for President Bill Clinton. Three years later, he teamed up with country superstar Alan Jackson for the song “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” which won the 2003 CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year and both Single of the Year and Video of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards. This was the first award Jimmy received in his 30+ years of doing music.
Jimmy has performed at the Xfinity Center amphitheater in Mansfield, Massachusetts 58 times, more than any other venue he’s played at during the course of his career.
