Interpol, an American rock band from New York City which formed in 1997, was one of the leaders of the post-punk revival which took place in New York at the turn of the 21st century. They were present at the Luna Lounge when bands such as themselves, the Strokes, Longwave, the National, and Stellastarr when New York’s indie music scene was taking shape. Post-punk bands like Joy Division, Television, and the Chameleons The group’s lead vocalist is Paul Banks, who originally played rhythm guitar before switching to bass after the band’s first bassist, Carlos Dengler, left the band to pursue independent musical ventures. The second original band member remaining is Daniel Kessler, the lead guitarist. Sam Fogarino became the group’s drummer in 2010.

The roots of the band trace back to a 1997 philosophy class at New York University where Kessler linked up with the original drummer, Drudy, by chance. The band released several EPs on their own before being signed by Matador records in 2001. By the time Turn On the Bright Lights was recorded in 2002, major tracks “NYC” and “PDA” had already been hammered out on these early EPs. Music videos were recorded for the singles “PDA”, “NYC”, and “Obstacle 1”. Obstacle one has accumulated roughly four million hits since 2002. Bands such as the Killers, Editors, the xx, the Organ, and She Wants Revenge have all cited this seminal album, Turn On the Bright Lights, as an influence.

Antics, Interpol’s follow-up to their first album, began the growth of the band’s popularity in the UK. Three singles, “Slow Hands”, “Evil”, and “C’mere” all charted in the Top 40 across the pond. After switching their representation to Capitol Records, Interpol released Our Love to Admire in 2007. Then the band reversed the decision and signed again with Matador before releasing their self-titled album in 2009.

A 2005 video of the band performing one of their first hits, “PDA” at the Eurokéenes Rock Festival in France, offers the essence of the band on stage. The crowd is into it from the jump; they clap in unison as the drummer pedals the bass. The band’s sound is composed of harmonized guitar, staccato bass, and lots of snares. Banks’ lyrics require focus to pick out of Interpol’s wall of sound. Though this is less true live than in some recordings. Interpol attracts diehard fans who know the band’s music well, which makes for a highly involved crowd atmosphere.
