Il Divo is the name of a quartet of male singers. The group is comprised of German-born Spanish baritone Carlos Marín, Swiss tenor Urs Bühler, American tenor David Miller, and French singer-songwriter Sébastien Izambard. Simon Cowell, the mega-famous British producer spent three years scouring the globe for singers to recreate and surpass the sound of the Three Tenors. Cowell found Bühler and Miller who are both classically trained tenors, and Izambard who was fairly successful in creating pop music on his own in France. Marín’s baritone adds depth to the group’s sound. The name Il Divo is the Italian masculine colloquialism for stars or celebrities. “Regrassa a Mi” the lead single from Il Divo’s self-titled debut album, was a major hit. For the quartets, the first couple of albums Il Divo and Ancora records were released in Europe and the UK before being released in the United States. By 2006, Il Divo was an international sensation, The release of Il Divo Collezione which includes their first three albums and a DVD, along with a 20-page booklet of exclusive photos, helped propel the group towards stardom. DVDs of multiple live concert performances which contain backstage interviews of the singers have also been embraced by fans.
A new type of popular music was introduced by Il Divo. The group’s sound has been labeled as a classical crossover, operatic pop, or popera. Essentially the group takes popular songs such as Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and records them using an operatic repertoire over classical arrangements. “Alelujah” performed live by Il Divo has over 50 million views on YouTube.
