Geico 500 Talladega is one of NASCAR’s most iconic tracks. And there have been some great finishes since NASCAR started racing there in 1971. There was the 1977 race that produced 63 lead changes. Darrell Waltrip held off charges by Cale Yarborough, Donnie Allison, and Benny Parsons to take the checkered flag. There was Bill Elliot’s performance in 1985 when the legend came from two laps down and overcame Kyle Petty to take the win. And then there was what Darrell Waltrip called “The Greatest Talladega race ever” in 2010. A track record of 88 lead changes and three green-white-checker finishes ended up with Kevin Harvick beating Jamie McMurray by a tire (.12 seconds officially) at the finish line.
