Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in 1968 right before the founder of the band, Syd Barrett, left. He was one of the masterminds behind the hugely popular concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. After a little more than ten years, the band had become one of the bestselling of all-time. When Roger Waters left Pink Floyd in 1985, Gilmour became the head of the band. Today, he performs as a solo artist. He has put out a number of albums as a solo artist, and still attracts huge crowds. Pink Floyd might not be a relevant band anymore, but the name power still draws many people to his shows, whether they have heard him on his own or not. He has written many songs over the years, many of which are still cult classics. These include, “Money,” “Shine on You Crazy Diamond,” and “Another Brick in the Wall.” Back in 2006, Gilmour said that it was close to impossible that the members of Pink Floyd would ever perform together again, citing creative difficulties.
Gilmour is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, voted in as a member of Pink Floyd. In addition to his musical career, he is an avid philanthropist.
